Candlelighters—A Program of Any Baby Can

All money raised at the Harvest Classic benefits the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Program

Candlelighters History

Candlelighters/Austin Area was founded in 1988 as a grass-roots, parent-driven nonprofit to aid children and families battling childhood cancer. As the number of families facing the strain of childhood cancer grew (from 15 in the first year to nearly 500 today), the organization Candlelighters evolved into a combined effort between professional social workers and parent/mentor programs to help families cope with the challenges of having a child with cancer. In 2003, Candlelighters merged with Any Baby Can, increasing the scope of both non-profit organizations.

No family should have to go through their journey with cancer alone.

To provide comprehensive psychosocial support and service for children with cancer and similar blood disorders, and their families. Candlelighters provides support throughout all stages of cancer without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or financial status. Candlelighters is the only local agency providing a continuum of care to children with cancer and their families, throughout the family’s entire struggle with the disease.

Included among the many services offered by Candlelighters are counseling and crisis intervention, support groups, school-based services, family events, holiday celebrations, Camp Grey Dove for siblings, and bereavement services.

A Letter from the Any Baby Can Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Program

June 4, 2012

To all Harvest Classic Supporters,

For the past nine years, Central Texas Motorcycle Charities has produced the Harvest Classic European and Vintage Motorcycle Rally in Luckenbach, Texas.  All proceeds from this event are donated to the Any Baby Can Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Program.  Your funding has supported families affected by a childhood cancer diagnosis, like Jim:

At just eight years old, Jim was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia.  Within a matter of days, he went from recess and third grade homeroom to five months of intensive chemotherapy treatments.  At the hospital, Jim’s family was referred to the Any Baby Can Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Program.  A Candlelighters social worker, Yuri, met with Jim’s mom at the hospital and together, they prioritized the family’s needs: information on Jim’s diagnosis, advocacy with his school, navigation of Medicaid processes, basic needs support, organization of bills and medical information, mental health counseling, and respite services.  Although it’s not always the case with childhood cancer, Jim is progressing well and recently returned to school.  So after hospital beds, medication and lots of rest, what is Jim excited about now? “Recess!”

Our mission is to improve the lives of children by strengthening them and their families through education, therapy and family support services.  It is through the hard work of the many volunteers and generous contributors of this event that we are able to continue to provide the vital services for the families and children in our community who need us the most.

We appreciate the hard work that goes into making this event so successful.  We are excited to partner with you in the Harvest Classic once again.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Who is CTMC

CrewCTMC is just a name for a small group of people whose lives have been touched by pediatric cancer. Some of us are childhood friends, others are newfound ones, and we all want to do what we can to help kids fight cancer. Many of us work on this rally in honor and memory of Emma Duke, who passed away from Neuroblastoma at the young age of 4. Emma was the sweet daughter of Russell and Kathy Duke, and throughout Emma’s struggle against childhood cancer, the Candlelighters were always there to provide counseling, special events, Christmas toys, airline tickets for out-of-town treatment, and much more. Even though Emma is in heaven, there are still kids who are fighting cancer right now, and the Candlelighters are there to help them. Our goal at CTMC is to make the Harvest Classic be the best rally you’ve ever attended and, most importantly, raise as much money as possible for this very worthy charity.
